After reading the first few of chapters of “Career Opportunities in Biotechnology and Drug Development,” I couldn’t force myself to keep reading, and so, I scanned the rest of the book hoping I would find something that would pique my interest. I did not. The book is very dry and boring and chockfull of business-speak generalities. It was like reading a user’s manual. I expected something more interesting, exciting, and useful like “Bioevolution” by Michael Fumento.

The best career advice for those in Biotech and Pharma! Great advice for entrepreneurs interested in beginning their own startup (such as what to look for in your CEO, lifestyle, team dynamics, etc.)

This book is only one I know of that comprehensively describes all of the different types of jobs at biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. As most students come out of school, they only know about doing research and this book is a great eye-opener to all of the other types of jobs that a scientist may be qualified to perform. I highly recommend this book to all biology/chemistry graduate students who are starting to think about starting a career in the industry.

” Career Opportunities in Biotechnology and Drug Development” has been an invlaubale resource for me as I consider my next job. After two postdocs and working as a Scientist at a Biotech company, I was ready for a career change. I wanted a job in Science but wanted to move away from bench work.
The book discusses, in depth, over 100 careers in Biotech and Drug development. I was surprised at the number of options available. After skimming through the whole book, I was able to narrow down my interests to a few options. I considered marketing, business development, IP law, health care finance, and Venture Capital and Banking. I read these sections in detail and decided I wanted to pursue a career in business development.
The chapter on Business development described in detail the career prospects, the pros and cons of a career in business development, and most importantly how to break into the field. I am following some of the suggested strategies to land a job in business development.
The internet and some journals have descriptions of alternative careers,
but the information is scattered and sometimes does not provide enough detail. This book is great because all the information is available in one place. I browse through the book every now and then and get fresh ideas and perspectives every time.
This book is a must-have for every student and professional considering a career in Biotechnology and Drug Development.

As a recruiter with a focus on Biotechnology and Pharma this is a book that I use often. When I need to fully understand a particular role and it’s requirements and what an actual day is like for a person who performs this function and what is needed to be successful in the role, this is where I turn. It is well written, easy to understand and well laid out for reference. I highly recommend for recruiters and jobseekers alike.
